In this two-day program students will develop outdoor skills while exploring the woods, wetlands and beach, observing the natural world on a deeper level.
On day one, following fun and interactive activities that introduce the animals, plants, and natural communities of the Center Hill Preserve, students will head to the beach where they can observe the variety of life found in a real tide pool.
On day two, students will learn about our local woods and wildlands and then, following in Thoreau’s footprints, visit a pitch pine-oak forest, the signature community of our globally rare Massachusetts Coastal Pine Barrens ecoregion.
On both days students will be encouraged to collect leaves, bugs, feathers and such to bring back to our “lab” for closer observation. We’ll be using a Dinoscope, which displays the magnified specimen on a large screen, allowing us to maintain physical distancing and for all participants to observe the images at the same time. Students will be able to take home images of their specimens.
